In early 2020 (pre quarantine) artspace and Driftaway Float Center in Bossier City partnered to bring a unique exhibition to the public which allowed local artists to utilize the Float Pods at Driftaway to create an original artwork from their experience. This resulted in artworks that showcase both the artist’s individual experience, and the boosted creativity and other mental benefits of using the Float Pods.

Float pods use Flotation therapy is a highly effective means of stress relief and relaxation, using a float tank (also called an isolation tank or sensory deprivation tank). Flotation consists of lying in a pod containing 10 inches of super-saturated Epsom-Salt (Magnesium Sulfate) water. The high concentration of salt enables the individual to float effortlessly on the surface of the water. The water is heated to 93.5 degrees, or skin temperature which makes it difficult to distinguish between the individual’s skin and the water.

With force of gravity neutralized, the cortisol levels in the brain decrease, lowering stress. The pod allows for prime blood flow to all parts of the body, unlike lying on a mattress or other surface. Beside the numerous physical benefits to float therapy, individuals who have undergone the experience of “floating” report many different mental benefits as well, including but not limited to boosted creativity and even hallucinatory experiences.

Exhibition dates are August 7th - September 6th, 2020, a 4 week juried exhibition, displaying the work of 30 local NWLA Directory Artists.
